Cypress Wood Floors Maintenance Guide

Cypress wood floors are considered one of the most durable and resilient wood floors available in the market. It is a good option if you want to add natural beauty to your home. However, proper care and maintenance of the flooring is required if you want them to last for a long time.

Helpful Maintenance Tips for Your Cypress Wood Floors

Here are some maintenance tips to help keep the beauty of cypress hardwood floors for years to come.

  • Area Rugs

Area rugs can help protect your wood floors from dirt, spills, and other damage. If you choose not to use area rugs, make sure that your wood floors are covered with some form of protection from liquid damage, such as a laminate or hardwood flooring protector. They can be placed over your existing flooring and should be cleaned regularly.

  • Furniture Placement

Furniture placement is just as crucial for your hardwood floors as it is for any other room in your home. Ensure that you have adequate space between all furniture and walls so that you don't scratch or scrape the floor when moving furniture around. This not only protects the floor itself but also prevents unnecessary scratches on doors and walls due to items sliding against them. A wooden furniture protector is another good investment if heavy furniture may occasionally rest up against walls or doors.

How to Clean Cypress Wood Floors

Dust regularly using a soft dust mop or vacuum cleaner to remove dirt and debris. Mop with a damp mop and warm water if the floor becomes dirty. Do not use wax on any cypress wood floor. Waxing will darken the floor and may cause discoloration.

  • Treat water spots and scuff marks with the right cleaner.

Don't use a soap-based cleaner on your cypress wood floors because it can leave an oily residue that dulls the wood. Instead, look for cleansers designed specifically for cleaning floors made from hardwoods like cypress, and then follow the instructions on the label of your chosen product carefully.

  • Polish once you have sealed your floor

You can polish it with a soft rag or mop it with mineral spirits. This process will remove any residue on the floor and make it easier to clean in the future. It would help if you polished your cypress floors once a month.

  • Prevent moisture buildup and water damage

Cypress wood is naturally resistant to water damage, but prolonged exposure can cause damage over time. If your floor gets wet, especially from standing water or flooding, dry it immediately by removing all rugs and runners and using fans in the room to circulate air. Once the area is dried out, apply a clear water-based polyurethane sealer to protect against future damage. Do NOT sand to remove water stains as this will expose the wood's porous structure leading to discoloration over time.

  • New cypress wood floors should be sealed immediately after installation

Cypress is naturally resistant to water, but the sealer will protect the wood from everyday spills such as hot coffee or sticky fingerprints. You should maintain your cypress wood floor by sealing it once every six months.

If you have pets in your home, be sure to clean up any accidents immediately; pets tend to urinate in the same places repeatedly, so the spot can become permanently discolored otherwise.

Cypress wood floors are perfect for your home

If you want your cypress wood floors to last for years to come, this guide should help. While the process may seem daunting at first, your cypress floors will look as good today as they do the day you bought them with regular care and maintenance.
